Project Description
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a monumental endeavour executed by Balfour Beatty, stands as a groundbreaking addition to Birmingham's healthcare landscape. Representing the city's first new hospital in over seven decades, this project was a cornerstone in the urban regeneration plan for Bournbrook and Selly Oak, contributing significantly to the city's healthcare infrastructure.
Towering 63 meters high and covering an expansive floor area of approximately 500,000m² across nine floors, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a colossal structure, making it the largest community healthcare development outside of London at the time of construction.
The hospital boasts 30 state-of-the-art theatres and accommodates 1,105 single beds across 92 distinct zones, including a dedicated floor for the armed forces.
Forming part of a £1 billion urban regeneration plan, the hospital played a vital role in revitalizing the Bournbrook and Selly Oak areas, replacing the previous Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals.
Overcoming unique challenges, including operating within a 'live' hospital environment, managing logistics for temporary facilities, and rebuilding essential infrastructure like a 'blue light' road, required meticulous planning and strategic execution.
In partnership with Balfour Beatty, MSS's project team provided a comprehensive logistics package, integrating high levels of build sustainability into transport and logistics plans. This collaboration ensured the smooth and efficient construction of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, reinforcing its significance as a landmark healthcare facility in Birmingham.
