Project Description

Intu Shopping Centre, Watford: Elevating Retail and Leisure Experiences: Laing O’Rourke.

Laing O’Rourke entrusted Munnelly Support Services (MSSL) with the pivotal roles of overseeing traffic and waste management for the extension of INTU Watford retail space, located in the heart of Watford Town Centre, incorporating the previous Charter Place area. This dynamic project seamlessly combined elements of demolition, refurbishment, the retention of a Grade II listed building, and new construction across eight floors.

The project's scope included an array of enhancements, comprising 35 retail spaces, 10 restaurants, 9 cinemas (including 1 Imax), a leisure facility, and an open-air atrium area crowned with a glazed roof. These additions not only expanded retail offerings but also elevated the leisure and entertainment landscape in Watford.

The complexity of the project was heightened by the need to integrate new elements with the retention of a Grade II listed building, showcasing Laing O’Rourke’s commitment to architectural heritage alongside modern retail and leisure demands. MSSL, adhering to Laing O’Rourke's Construction Traffic Management Plan (CTMP) and waste management scope, executed the project with precision. The construction and fit-out phases were orchestrated with minimum disruption to the existing shopping centre, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.

The collaborative efforts between Laing O’Rourke and MSSL resulted in the timely delivery of this major town centre project, without compromising the safety of the construction site or causing disruptions to the ongoing operations of the shopping centre. The project stands as a testament to effective traffic and waste management, ensuring a smooth blend of retail expansion and architectural rejuvenation.
